DNS requirements for installing Active Directory April 16, 2018, 2:44 p.m.

When you install Active Directory on a member server, the member server is promoted to a domain controller. Active Directory uses DNS as the location mechanism for domain controllers, enabling computers on the network to obtain IP addresses of domain controllers.

During the installation of Active Directory, the service (SRV) and address (A) resource records are dynamically registered in DNS, which are necessary for the successful functionality of the domain controller locator (Locator) mechanism.

How DNS Support for Active Directory Works: Active Directory April 16, 2018, 2:44 p.m.

Active Directory uses DNS as its domain controller location mechanism and leverages the namespace design of DNS in the design of Active Directory domain names. As a result, DNS is positioned within the discoverability and logical structure components of Active Directory technology components.

Windows Server DNS Logging and Diagnostics Feb. 27, 2018, 3:11 p.m.

Enhanced DNS logging and diagnostics in Windows Server 2012 R2 and later includes DNS Audit events and DNS Analytic events. DNS audit logs are enabled by default, and do not significantly affect DNS server performance. DNS analytical logs are not enabled by default, and typically will only affect DNS server performance at very high DNS query rates.

How to use DNSLint to troubleshoot Active Directory replication issues March 30, 2017, 3:51 p.m.

DNSLint is a Microsoft Windows utility that can help you determine whether all DNS servers that are supposed to be authoritative for the root of an Active Directory forest actually have the necessary DNS records, and can resolve all of the necessary DNS records to successfully synchronise partition replicas among domain controllers in an Active Directory forest.

Name Resolution in Windows March 28, 2017, 9:10 a.m.

When the GetHostByName API is used, the Windows 2000 resolver first submits the name query to DNS. If DNS name resolution fails, the resolver checks whether the name is longer than 15 bytes. If it is longer, resolution fails. If not, the resolver then checks whether NetBIOS is running. If it is not running, resolution fails. If it is running, the resolver then tries NetBIOS name resolution.
